Where Does Zettlr Store Settings and Data?
Zettlr keeps settings and writing stats in an Electron data folder. The exact paths on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Last updated
Zettlr stores app settings in its Electron data directory. On Windows that is %APPDATA%\Zettlr. On macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Zettlr. On Linux it is ~/.config/Zettlr. Your notes are not here, only the app state.
The files worth knowing are config.json for settings, stats.json for writing stats, tags.json and targets.json, plus user.dic and custom.css. Copy that set to move machines. The --data-dir flag overrides the whole folder if you want it elsewhere.
Where Zettlr stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Zettlr
AppData is hidden, so paste the path into Explorer. Key files: config.json, stats.json, tags.json, targets.json, user.dic, custom.css, plus defaults and snippets folders.
~/Library/Application Support/Zettlr
Use Finder Go to Folder since ~/Library is hidden. Same file set as Windows. The --data-dir launch flag can redirect this folder for portable setups.
~/.config/Zettlr
Standard XDG config spot. Back up config.json and stats.json before major upgrades; the project itself recommends snapshotting stats.json first.
Frequently asked questions
which zettlr files do i copy to a new computer
Copy config.json, stats.json, tags.json, targets.json, user.dic, plus the defaults, snippets, and custom.css entries. The docs list exactly these files for migration. Skip the workspace paths worry: Zettlr prunes stale ones on first launch.
how do i reset zettlr settings
Delete or rename config.json while Zettlr is closed. The app rebuilds it with defaults next launch. Your notes are plain Markdown files elsewhere, so they stay untouched.
