Where Does Mark Text Store Settings and Sessions?

Mark Text keeps preferences, sessions and recovery files in an Electron user-data folder. Paths on all platforms plus portable mode.

Last updated

Mark Text stores all configuration in the standard Electron user-data folder: preferences.json for settings, sessions for window layouts and open files, recovery for unsaved-tab backups, plus logs and dictionaries. Your Markdown documents stay wherever you saved them. Only the editor state lives here.

Crash recovery starts in the recovery subfolder, keyed by file hash. For portable use, drop a marktext-user-data folder next to the executable or pass --user-data-dir. The directory must stay writable or the app refuses to start, so check permissions before blaming the install.

Where Mark Text stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\marktext

preferences.json, session, recovery and logs inside. Portable mode reads marktext-user-data beside MarkText.exe, or any path from --user-data-dir.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/marktext

Same internal layout as Windows. Reach it with Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Alias the binary for terminal flags like --safe when plugins misbehave.

Linux
~/.config/marktext

Honors XDG_CONFIG_HOME when set. recently-used.json appears here on Linux and Windows only. Syncing machines? Copy preferences, skip logs and editorStates.

Frequently asked questions

Mark Text crashed, where are my unsaved tabs?

Look in the recovery subfolder of the data path above for hash-named backups of untitled and edited tabs. Reopen Mark Text normally first: persistent sessions restore themselves, and recovery covers the rest.

How do I run Mark Text in portable mode?

Create a marktext-user-data folder next to the executable on Windows or Linux, or launch with --user-data-dir pointing anywhere writable. All settings then live in that folder, nothing touches the system paths.
