Where Does Zinit Store Plugins and Snippets?

Zinit keeps plugins and snippets in ~/.local/share/zinit, with compiled state beside it and config in ~/.zshrc.

Last updated

Zinit downloads plugins into its data directory and compiles them for fast loading. Your .zshrc only holds the load commands, so the setup stays small and portable.

Wiping the data folder is the universal fix. Zinit refetches everything on next shell start from the commands in your rc file. Custom patches and compiled dumps regenerate automatically.

Where Zinit stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.local/share/zinit

Plugins, snippets and compiled state. Config lives in ~/.zshrc, overridable with $ZINIT_HOME. Delete this folder with shells closed to force a clean refetch.

macOS
~/.local/share/zinit

Same layout on Mac. Homebrew installs do not relocate it. Completions cache alongside plugins, so completion weirdness often clears with the same wipe.

Frequently asked questions

how do i reset zinit completely

Close all shells and delete ~/.local/share/zinit. Opening a new shell reinstalls every plugin declared in ~/.zshrc from scratch.

where are zinit snippets stored

Under the zinit data folder in snippets directories per source. They refetch like plugins, so local edits there get overwritten on update.
