Where Does Affinity Designer Store Settings?

Affinity Designer V2 uses a .affinity folder in your home dir for MSIX installs, with older data under AppData or Library.

Last updated

Affinity Designer V2 changed homes on Windows. MSIX installs write to a .affinity folder directly in your user profile. MSI or EXE installs still use Roaming AppData. V1 used AppData as well. Check which installer you ran before hunting, since both paths can exist side by side.

Your .afdesign documents are elsewhere entirely. They live where you saved them, not in app data. The folders below hold brushes, assets, preferences, and autosave recovery. Copy the right one when moving machines and keep documents backed up on their own.

Where Affinity Designer stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\.affinity\Designer\2.0

MSIX default. MSI/EXE and V1 use %APPDATA%\Affinity\Designer. Autosave recovery sits inside. Close all Affinity apps before copying or moving this tree.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Affinity Designer/user

Direct Serif builds. Mac App Store builds nest under ~/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner. Contents are not plain files, so copy the whole user folder rather than picking pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover an unsaved Affinity Designer file?

Only if autosave wrote a recovery copy and you accept the restore prompt on next launch. An empty Autosave folder means there is nothing to restore. Save named files early to get recovery on later edits.

How do I move Affinity Designer settings to a new PC?

Copy the matching data folder above with the apps closed, then launch and reactivate with your Affinity ID. MSIX and MSI paths differ, so match installer type on both machines.
