Where Does Synfig Studio Keep Projects and Plugins?
Synfig projects are sifz or sfg files wherever you save them. Plugins go in a Synfig folder under the user profile, one path per OS.
Last updated
Synfig Studio projects live wherever you save them, in sif, sifz, or sfg formats. The app also keeps an auto backup on a timer (default three minutes) and offers to recover it after a crash. That safety copy only helps if the original was saved at least once.
Shared extras have fixed homes. Plugins install into a Synfig folder under the user profile, with the exact base differing per OS. Override the settings folder entirely with the SYNFIG_USER_SETTINGS variable when you need a portable setup.
Where Synfig Studio stores this, by platform
C:\Users\<username>\Synfig\plugins
User plugins on Windows. Drop each plugin folder here and restart Synfig.
/home/<username>/.config/synfig/plugins
User plugins and settings on Linux. Set SYNFIG_USER_SETTINGS to relocate the whole folder.
/Users/<username>/Library/Synfig/plugins
User plugins on Mac. Same layout as the other platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Which Synfig save format should I use?
Save as sifz for a compressed single file or sfg to bundle images and audio in a zip container. Plain sif files get large fast.
How do I install a Synfig plugin?
Copy the plugin folder into the location below for your OS. Each plugin is a folder with a python script and plugin.xml inside.
