Where Does Albert Store Config and Data?

Albert splits cache, config, and data per Qt and XDG rules. The Linux and macOS base dirs.

Last updated

Albert follows Qt QStandardPaths with XDG roots: config in ~/.config/albert, cache in ~/.cache/albert (with the IPC socket inside), data in ~/.local/share/albert. Plugins keep subfolders by identifier under data. The official FAQ documents exactly this table, including vendor twins you should never touch.

macOS mirrors it under ~/Library: Preferences, Caches, and Application Support each hold an albert folder. Environment variables can relocate XDG bases on Linux-likes; Albert honors them. Back up the user dirs only; app and vendor trees regenerate.

Where Albert stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/albert

Settings here; cache at ~/.cache/albert with ipc_socket inside; data at ~/.local/share/albert. XDG env vars relocate bases. Leave /etc/xdg and /usr/share twins alone.

macOS
~/Library/Preferences/albert

Config twin with Caches and Application Support siblings. Same plugin by identifier layout under data. Finder hides ~/Library, so use Go to Folder.

Frequently asked questions

how do i reset albert settings

Quit Albert and remove ~/.config/albert (or the Preferences twin on Mac). Cache and data survive that, so plugins and history stay while options revert.

where are albert plugins stored

Under the data dir in per plugin identifier subfolders. User installed ones live in the user tree; shipped ones in vendor paths you should not edit.
