Where Does Launchy Store Config and Index?

Launchy keeps launchy.ini plus index databases in Roaming Launchy on Windows in installed mode, or beside the program in portable mode.

Last updated

Launchy runs in two modes and the config follows the mode. Installed mode writes launchy.ini with its databases to the Roaming Launchy folder. Portable mode keeps a config launchy.ini beside the program for life on a USB stick.

The mode check is file-based at startup: a config file in the program tree means portable, its absence means installed. Skins and plugins stay with the install in both modes, so settings backups need the skins folder added when custom looks matter.

Where Launchy stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Launchy

Installed-mode home with launchy.ini settings plus launchy.db index and history.db. Quit Launchy before copying since the index rewrites while running. Portable installs ignore this folder entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Launchy settings to a new PC?

Copy launchy.ini with launchy.db and history.db from the Roaming Launchy folder while Launchy is quit. Those three carry settings, the file index and launch history. Skins live separately under the install skins folder and need their own copy.

How do I run Launchy in portable mode?

Check for a config launchy.ini inside the program folder. Its presence switches Launchy to portable mode with everything beside the executable, which suits USB sticks. Installed mode instead uses the Roaming folder and ignores the program directory.

Why does portable Launchy show wrong programs?

Rebuild the index from the context menu after moving machines. Portable installs carry an index of the old computer, so stale entries linger until a rebuild. Set the rescan interval in options or trigger it by hand.
