Where Does Amarok Store Its Database?

Amarok splits config, collection DB, and scripts across KDE homes. SQLite default with MySQL option.

Last updated

Amarok keeps settings in amarokrc inside ~/.config with collection data under ~/.local/share/amarok, the standard KDE split proven by Konsole and Kate. The collection database defaults to embedded SQLite, so most users never touch a DB server.

Big libraries can switch to external MySQL in Configure Amarok, Database: create amarokdb, grant a user, and point the app at localhost. Scripts from the built in manager extend the data dir. Exact path may vary by distro packaging; the config location above is the stable anchor.

Where Amarok stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/amarokrc

Main settings file. Collection data under ~/.local/share/amarok. SQLite default needs no server; MySQL mode stores only credentials here with data in amarokdb.

Frequently asked questions

should i use mysql with amarok

Only for very large collections where SQLite lags. Create the database and user in MariaDB first, then flip the Database page to external MySQL. Small libraries gain nothing and add a failure point.

how do i back up amarok

Copy amarokrc plus ~/.local/share/amarok with Amarok closed. MySQL users dump amarokdb separately; SQLite users get the DB inside the data dir automatically.
