Where Does AmneziaVPN Store Servers and Settings?

AmneziaVPN keeps servers and settings in the Windows registry, with an in-app backup file for moving between devices.

Last updated

AmneziaVPN stores its configuration in the Windows registry, which surprises people doing a clean reinstall. Deleting Program Files and AppData changes nothing. The old servers greet you again because the registry hive survived.

The supported way to move or back up is inside the app: Settings, Backup, Make a backup produces a portable file that restores on any device and version. Only reach for regedit when the app itself will not start and you need a true wipe.

Where AmneziaVPN stores this, by platform

Windows
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AmneziaVPN.ORG\AmneziaVPN

All servers, protocols, and preferences. Uninstalling leaves this behind, so wipe the hive for a genuine clean reinstall. Prefer Settings > Backup for normal migration. That file restores cross platform, registry surgery does not.

Frequently asked questions

Reinstalling AmneziaVPN kept my old servers. Why?

The uninstaller preserves HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AmneziaVPN.ORG\AmneziaVPN, where all settings live. Delete that hive with the app closed for a real fresh start. Use the in-app reset button first if the app still launches.

How do I move AmneziaVPN to another device?

Open Settings, Backup, and Make a backup in the app, then Restore from backup on the new device. The file carries servers, protocols, and services together. Backups from newer versions may misbehave on much older ones, so update both ends first.
