Where Does Viscosity Store Connections?
Viscosity keeps connections in Application Support Viscosity on Mac and Roaming Viscosity OpenVPN on Windows. Export to move across OSes.
Last updated
Viscosity stores connections as folders of ovpn plus keys under an OpenVPN directory in per OS app data. A settings file (plist on Mac, XML on Windows) sits beside them with global preferences. The vendor KB lists both trees explicitly for backup.
Cross platform moves need the importer. Raw folder copies only work Mac to Mac or Windows to Windows, since each side keeps OS specific options. Importing a connection through the app translates those correctly. Connection folders group for shared credentials and scripts.
Where Viscosity stores this, by platform
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Viscosity/OpenVPN
Connection folders on Mac. Each connection is a folder with conf plus certs. Copy the whole OpenVPN tree to migrate.
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.plist
Global preferences plist on Mac. Back it up with the connections folder for full restores.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Viscosity\OpenVPN
Connections on Windows. The vendor bundles doc recommends exporting from Viscosity or lifting from this preferences folder.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Viscosity\Settings.xml
Global settings XML on Windows. Copy with the OpenVPN folder for same OS restores.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Viscosity to a new computer?
Copy the folders below to the same paths on the new machine. For Mac to Windows moves, import connections instead so OS specific options translate.
Moved connections ask for passwords. Why?
Passwords live in the system keychain, not the connection files. Re enter credentials after a copy and tick remember to store them again.
