Where Are Android App Files Stored?

Where Android keeps app files in shared storage, and why the Android/data folder stopped being browsable from Android 11 onward.

Last updated

Android splits app files into two places. Each app has a private sandbox under /data/data that nothing outside the app can read without root, and a shared area under /storage/emulated/0 where the files you can actually see live: Download, the media folders, and Android itself.

Android/data is the middle case. Apps keep large private files there: game saves, offline maps, editor projects. It sits in shared storage but behaves like a private folder, and file managers have been unable to open it since Android 11. Google has closed workaround routes since then, across Android 13, 14 and 15.

Android/media, its sibling, is still fully browsable, which is why WhatsApp and Telegram keep their media there. Check whether the app you care about uses media or data before reaching for any workaround.

Where Android stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/

One folder per package name, such as com.studio.game or com.whatsapp, each usually containing files and cache. File managers can list Android itself but get nowhere on this folder from Android 11 onward, and the file-picker routes that briefly worked were closed by Android 13. What still works: browse it over USB from a PC (MTP allows read and write), use ADB (adb shell ls /sdcard/Android/data, then adb pull), or run a file manager backed by Shizuku. Shortcut apps that open the phone's built-in Files activity can also get in on some devices, but Google patches that regularly, so treat it as device dependent.

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/

The shared spot for media apps want other apps to see, and still fully browsable with any file manager. WhatsApp keeps received images and video under Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media, and Telegram does something similar. Apps were pushed here by the same scoped storage rules that locked down Android/data, so if a folder exists in both places, media is the one you can reach.

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Download/

The normal user-visible area: anything saved from a browser or chat app lands here, often sorted into subfolders named after the source app on newer Android versions. Always browsable and always yours. If all you want is a file someone sent you rather than an app's internal data, this and Android/media cover almost every case.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open the Android/data folder?

Android 11 blocked other apps from entering it, and Android 13 finished the job for the file picker, so normal file managers hit a dead end there. This is a system rule, not a permission you can grant. Connect the phone to a PC over USB, or use ADB, to get in without root.

How do I access Android/data without a PC?

Install Shizuku, start it through wireless debugging or a one-off ADB command, then authorize a supporting file manager such as ZArchiver, Material Files or Total Commander. Shizuku restarts after every reboot, and some security patches break write access, so results vary by phone.

Where can I find files an app sent me?

Check /storage/emulated/0/Download first, then Android/media for apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, which keep received media in package-named folders there. Both are browsable with any file manager. Only dig into Android/data if you are after saves or other internal app files.
