Where Are Android Text Messages Stored?

Android's protected SMS database path, why no file manager can open it, and which backups actually restore your messages.

Last updated

Android keeps every SMS and MMS in a SQLite database called mmssms.db, inside the telephony provider's own private data. A file manager cannot open that folder, because Android's app sandbox reserves it for the process that owns it, and only root or a forensic tool gets past that. Our Android/data post covers why those folders are off limits in general.

So the practical answers are backups rather than file paths. Google Messages folds SMS, MMS and RCS into Android's device backup instead of writing a file you can browse, carriers keep their own records, and third-party tools such as SMS Backup & Restore export an XML wherever you tell them to. Check the backup setting before a factory reset, not after.

Where Android stores this, by platform

Android
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

Reading this needs root. Some devices keep the same database at /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/ instead, and MMS attachments land in the app_parts folder beside it. What works without root: in Google Messages, backups live in Android's device backup, at Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data, where an SMS & MMS messages toggle covers RCS as well. Older builds had a Back up to Google Drive switch inside Messages itself; current versions do not.

Frequently asked questions

where are text messages stored on my android phone

In mmssms.db, under /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/. That path is private to the messaging provider, so a file manager shows nothing there and ordinary backup apps cannot read it either. Getting the file out requires root or a forensic tool.

are my text messages backed up to google drive

Only if Android's device backup is on. Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data, make sure SMS & MMS messages is toggled, then tap Back up now. The result appears in Google Drive under Storage > Backups, though individual messages cannot be opened there like files.

how do i export my text messages from android

Use a third-party app such as SMS Backup & Restore, which writes an XML file to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or local storage, one you can keep and restore later. Google Messages has no export button of its own. Some carriers also expose message history on your account page.
