Where Does Google Messages Store Texts on Android?
Google Messages keeps its texts in a private bugle database on Android, alongside the system SMS store. Both need root to read directly.
Last updated
Google Messages stores texts twice. Its own private database is bugle_db under the com.google.android.apps.messaging package, and the system-wide copy is mmssms.db under the telephony provider. Both live in protected storage that needs root to open.
Day to day nobody touches either file. Backups run through Google One and restore exactly once at setup. Messages for web is a pairing view in the browser, not a second store. For manual inspection the table to know is sms for messages and pdu for MMS, with parts under the telephony app_parts folder.
Where Google Messages stores this, by platform
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.messaging/databases/bugle_db
Private message store with wal and shm companions, holding participants and threads. Needs root to read. The package is com.google.android.apps.messaging, distinct from the old AOSP messaging ID. Back up through Google One rather than copying this file.
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Canonical system SMS and MMS store with sms and pdu tables, plus parts under the telephony app_parts folder. Every SMS app on the phone, including Samsung Messages and Textra, reads through this database. Same root requirement as above.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Google Messages texts to a new phone?
Turn on Google One backup under Settings, Google, Backup and confirm SMS is included. It restores once during new phone setup and deletes after 57 idle days. It is the only supported path, since the database files need root to copy by hand.
Where does Messages for web keep its data?
Open messages.google.com/web on the computer and pair with the QR code or your Google Account. The browser caches encrypted threads but stores no portable files. Sending still routes through the phone connection, so the phone must stay online.
Is the database still called mmssms.db?
No. The exact file is bugle_db with wal and shm companions, and the system copy is mmssms.db under the telephony provider. Forensic dumps confirm both paths. Pointing at com.android.messaging, the old AOSP ID, lands in the wrong folder.
