Where Are Animal Well Save Files Located?

Animal Well stores saves in AppData LocalLow under Billy Basso on Windows, with the Linux copy mirrored inside the Proton prefix.

Last updated

Animal Well is a small Unity style build with one save location per machine. On Windows it lives in LocalLow under the developer name, in a folder literally called Animal Well. The file that matters is AnimalWell.sav.

On Linux through Proton the same Windows path is mirrored inside the compatdata prefix for app ID 813230. Steam Cloud also keeps a copy under userdata when it is enabled, which is the easiest recovery route after a reinstall.

Where Animal Well stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Billy Basso\Animal Well

AnimalWell.sav in this folder is the run. Copy the whole folder for a backup, since settings live next to the save.

Linux
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/813230/pfx/

Proton prefix for app ID 813230. Open the prefix drive and follow the same LocalLow path to reach the save from outside the game.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an Animal Well save from PC to another device?

Yes. The PC file is AnimalWell.sav in the Billy Basso folder. Handheld tools that read that file can import it, though the filename suffix differs per platform.

My save vanished after reinstalling. Where is the backup?

Enable Steam Cloud for the game and check the userdata folder for app ID 813230. If Cloud is off, the LocalLow folder is the only copy, so back it up by hand.

Does the Animal Well folder hold settings too?

That folder holds both the save and the settings for the Unity build. Deleting it resets everything, so copy it elsewhere first if you only want a fresh save.
