Last updated

Apple Music on Windows replaced iTunes for music libraries. Imports copy into Music then Apple Music unless you disable the copy option. The original stays put when copying is on. Librarydatabase, playlists, and ratings travel with that folder.

Change the target in Sidebar Actions then Settings then Files then Change. Existing files stay where they were; only new imports follow the new path. Use Reset to return to defaults. iPhone backups are separate and live in MobileSync, not in the music folder.

Where Apple Music stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Music\Apple Music

Find any track path with More and Properties and File, or More and Show in Explorer. Cache sits in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Apple Computer\Apple Music\Cache. Keep the folder local, not inside OneDrive.

macOS
~/Music/Music/Media

Modern macOS uses the Music app rather than iTunes. Exact path may vary by library choices, check Music settings if this does not match. Older Mojave and earlier builds used iTunes paths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move my Apple Music library to a new drive?

Change the media folder in Settings and Files, then consolidate so copies land in the new spot. Drag the old folder into the app window to relink stragglers, including playlists from the library file.

Why do songs vanish after a Windows upgrade?

OneDrive often renames Music paths and the library still points at the old spot. Repoint Files at the OneDrive aware folder, reimport with Add Folder, then dedupe. Exclude Music from aggressive sync if it recurs.
