Where Does Arena Chess Store Engines and Settings?

Where the Arena chess GUI keeps engines, books and settings.

Last updated

Arena is folder portable at heart: the directory you install or unzip into holds the exe, engines, books, tablebases and settings together. The ZIP distribution even skips the installer entirely.

Linux builds unpack the same way with bundled x64 and ARM engines. Engine management, books and PGN databases all resolve from that tree, so moving it moves everything. Back up the folder before engine experiments.

<Arena install folder>\

Portable style root with engines, books, tablebases and settings. ZIP installs let you choose the location freely. Add engines from the Engines menu pointing at their exe files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add an engine to Arena?

Use Engines, Install New Engine and point at the engine exe, then choose UCI or Winboard. Attach crafty style rc files in the ini row when engines need config files, which beats hand editing shortcuts.

Setup or ZIP: which Arena install should I use?

Unpack the ZIP to a folder of your choice instead. The archive ships engines, books, tablebases and PGN databases together, and the location you pick becomes the whole install.
