Where Does ChessBase Store Databases?

Where ChessBase keeps databases, books and the DBItems layout file.

Last updated

ChessBase centers on Documents\ChessBase: Bases for mega databases, Books for opening books, MyWork for your own databases, plus DBItems.cbini holding the main window layout. Playchess server games land here too.

Newer versions split Standard and Custom folders to dodge OneDrive mirroring pain on huge files. Point bulky databases at a local disk path while small settings stay synced. Removing a database symbol never deletes its files.

Where ChessBase stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\ChessBase\

Default database home with Bases, Books, MyWork and DBItems.cbini layout file. Search .cbh to find strays. Keep large databases on a local non OneDrive path via Custom folders.

Frequently asked questions

My ChessBase databases vanished. Where are they?

Search the disk for .cbh files. The default home is Documents ChessBase with Bases for large databases and MyWork for your own. Lost databases are usually intact files detached from the layout, not deletions.

How do I move my ChessBase layout to a new PC?

Copy DBItems.cbini from Documents ChessBase to the identical path on the new PC along with the database folders. Matching paths on both machines is required or the layout points at nothing.
