Where Does Aseprite Store Preferences?
Aseprite preferences folder on Windows, Mac and Linux, with aseprite.ini and the override variable.
Last updated
Aseprite stores configuration in a preferences folder under the platform's standard user directory. The headline file is aseprite.ini, joined by custom brushes, keyboard shortcut files and extension data. The in app shortcut is Edit, Preferences, then Locate Configuration File.
Power users get an escape hatch. Setting the ASEPRITE_USER_FOLDER environment variable redirects the whole folder elsewhere, which is handy for synced or portable setups. Edit nothing while Aseprite runs, since the app rewrites these files on exit.
Where Aseprite stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Aseprite
Type the path into the Run dialog. Holds aseprite.ini, user.aseprite-brushes and user.aseprite-keys. The sessions subfolder keeps recovery backups of unsaved work.
~/Library/Application Support/Aseprite
Same file layout as Windows. Use Go to Folder in Finder with the path, since Library stays hidden by default in normal browsing.
~/.config/aseprite
Open it from a terminal with xdg-open and the path. Respects $XDG_CONFIG_HOME when set, so check there first on customized systems.
Frequently asked questions
how do i reset aseprite preferences
Close Aseprite, then delete the files in the preferences folder, mainly aseprite.ini. The official reset guide lists this per platform, and relaunch rebuilds factory defaults.
how do i move aseprite settings to a new computer
Copy the whole preferences folder to the same path on the new machine with Aseprite closed. That carries options, custom brushes, keyboard shortcuts and extensions in one move.
