Where Does ASUSWRT Store JFFS Files and Backups?

ASUSWRT keeps custom scripts and configs in the /jffs partition (/jffs/configs and /jffs/scripts), with settings backups saved as Settings_Model.CFG through the web interface.

Last updated

ASUSWRT has two kinds of storage and they behave differently. NVRAM holds settings variables and survives flashing. The /jffs partition is a writable slice of flash for your own files, and it survives reboots but not necessarily firmware updates.

Most customization lives in /jffs. Config overrides go in /jffs/configs and boot scripts in /jffs/scripts on Merlin builds. The web interface backup page exports both a settings CFG file and a JFFS tarball. Download both before any major change, since a factory reset wipes NVRAM and formatting JFFS needs a reboot to take effect.

Where ASUSWRT stores this, by platform

Linux
/jffs

Writable flash storage for scripts and overrides. Check size under Tools, Sysinfo, Internal Storage. Back up from Administration, Restore Save Upload Setting before flashing. Custom configs belong in /jffs/configs and scripts in /jffs/scripts.

Frequently asked questions

Does flashing firmware erase JFFS?

Yes, back it up first from Administration, Restore Save Upload Setting, using the JFFS backup button. Flashing can wipe the partition even though reboots preserve it. Keep the backup_jffs.tar file somewhere off the router.

Where do custom configs go on Asuswrt-Merlin?

Place override files in /jffs/configs/ with a .add suffix to append to firmware generated configs, and put trigger scripts in /jffs/scripts/. Enable custom scripts under Administration, System first. Reboot to apply, since the hooks run at boot.
