Where Does DD-WRT Store Settings and JFFS Files?

DD-WRT stores settings in NVRAM and custom files in /jffs, with startup scripts in /jffs/etc/config and settings backups made from Administration, Backup.

Last updated

DD-WRT keeps settings in NVRAM, which is a small variable store rather than a normal filesystem. Everything else custom goes in /jffs when the router has room for it. Knowing which of the two holds your change decides how you back it up.

Startup customization has one fixed address: /jffs/etc/config with a .startup extension, made executable. Scripts there run at boot. The web interface backup under Administration covers NVRAM settings. Copy /jffs contents separately over SSH, since the settings backup does not include your files.

Linux
/jffs

Persistent custom storage on supported routers. Startup scripts live in /jffs/etc/config with .startup extensions. Check available space before storing much here, since the partition is small on older models.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a custom script survive reboot on DD-WRT?

Save files under /jffs/etc/config with a .startup extension and make them executable, then DD-WRT runs them at every boot. This keeps custom firewall or mount commands alive across reboots without re-entering them in the web interface.

How do I back up DD-WRT before flashing?

Use the backup button under Administration, Backup to download the settings file, and separately copy anything you stored in /jffs. NVRAM backups restore settings variables, but files you placed in JFFS need their own copy. Keep both before flashing.
