Where Does Atuin Store History and Config?
Atuin's config.toml path and its history.db SQLite location, plus the overrides that move them.
Last updated
Atuin keeps two kinds of files apart. Human edited settings live in ~/.config/atuin, while the machine written SQLite history and encryption key live in ~/.local/share/atuin. That split follows XDG, so both sides move if you override XDG_CONFIG_HOME or XDG_DATA_HOME.
The database path itself is one line in the config. Changing db_path is the supported way to relocate history, and ATUIN_CONFIG_DIR relocates the config tree for testing or portable setups.
Where Atuin stores this, by platform
~/.local/share/atuin/history.db
SQLite history database. Config is at ~/.config/atuin/config.toml and the key at ~/.local/share/atuin/key. Override with db_path in config or ATUIN_CONFIG_DIR for the config dir.
~/.local/share/atuin/history.db
Same XDG style paths as Linux. Config at ~/.config/atuin/config.toml. The daemon writes here continuously, so copy it only when the shell is idle or export first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Atuin history to another drive?
Set db_path in ~/.config/atuin/config.toml to the new location, move history.db there, then restart the shell. Keep key alongside it or sync breaks.
Where is the Atuin encryption key?
Beside the database at ~/.local/share/atuin/key by default. Lose it and synced history cannot be decrypted on a new machine, so back both files up together.
