Where Does Black Box Terminal Store Config?

Black Box keeps its settings in dconf under com.raggesilver.BlackBox on Linux, with padding and behavior as schema keys. No config file exists.

Last updated

Black Box is the simpler cousin in GNOME terminal land. Every setting lives in one dconf tree under the author-namespaced schema. No profiles layer, no palettes folder, no INI fallback.

That simplicity makes backup a one-liner in either direction. The Flatpak build shares the same tree as native installs, so one dump covers both. Just keep it separate from Ptyxis in your notes, since the two trees look alike at a glance and diverge on profiles.

Where Black Box stores this, by platform

Linux
/com/raggesilver/BlackBox

Single settings tree for padding and behavior with no per-profile branches. Same tree for Flatpak ID com.raggesilver.BlackBox. Dump and load with dconf for migration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Black Box settings?

Dump the tree with dconf dump and restore with dconf load against the same path. Keys cover padding and terminal behavior. The schema name com.raggesilver.BlackBox is literal, so copy it exactly when scripting.

How do I reset Black Box to defaults?

Run gsettings reset-recursively against the Black Box schema. That restores every key under the tree at once. Flatpak installs share the same tree, so the reset covers sandboxed copies too.

Is this the same as Ptyxis config?

They are different apps with different trees. Ptyxis uses org.gnome.Ptyxis with per-profile UUID branches plus a palettes folder, while Black Box uses the single com.raggesilver.BlackBox path with no verified palettes equivalent. Check which terminal you run before editing.
