Where Does Ptyxis Store Profiles and Config?
Ptyxis keeps profiles in dconf under org.gnome.Ptyxis on Linux, with custom palettes as drop-in files. No flat config file exists.
Last updated
Ptyxis stores almost nothing as files. Profiles, transparency and behavior all live in dconf under the org.gnome.Ptyxis tree with per-profile UUID branches. There is no INI to copy between machines.
Palettes break the rule in a pleasant way. Custom .palette files drop into a palettes folder that varies by install type: local share for distro packages, the Flatpak data tree for sandboxed builds. Learn your install ID first, since stable, nightly and devel each use different ones.
Where Ptyxis stores this, by platform
/org/gnome/Ptyxis
Profile tree with per-UUID branches for opacity and behavior. Dump with dconf for backups. Flatpak builds answer to different app IDs while the tree shape stays constant.
~/.local/share/org.gnome.Ptyxis/palettes
Drop-in custom palettes for distro installs. Flatpak equivalents sit under ~/.var/app/<flathub-id>/data/<flathub-id>/palettes with the ID varying by channel. Restart Ptyxis after adding files.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Ptyxis profiles?
Read and write the dconf tree, for example dconf read for the default profile UUID or dconf dump for the lot. Profiles live under per-UUID subpaths with opacity and behavior beside them. Back up with dconf dump piped to a file, never by copying a text config.
Where do custom Ptyxis color palettes go?
Drop .palette files into ~/.local/share/org.gnome.Ptyxis/palettes for distro installs, or the matching data palettes folder under ~/.var for Flatpak builds. Restart the terminal and the new entries appear. This folder is the one real-file exception in an otherwise dconf-only app.
Why do Ptyxis Flatpak commands fail with my app ID?
Switch the gsettings call to the right ID. Stable Flathub answers to app.devsuite.Ptyxis, GNOME nightly to org.gnome.Ptyxis and the dev nightly to org.gnome.Ptyxis.Devel. The dconf tree underneath stays the same shape.
