Where Does Guake Store Settings?

Guake keeps prefs in dconf, not a config file. The key path plus dump and reset commands.

Last updated

Guake stores preferences in dconf under /apps/guake, the GConf era path it carried forward. The Preferences GUI edits those keys; no text config exists to hand edit. Startup scripts and tab layouts reference the same store.

Back up with dconf dump /apps/guake/ and restore with dconf load. Reset a stuck option (like login shell breaking startup) with dconf-editor or reset on its key. The physical database is ~/.config/dconf/user, but always go through the dconf tool.

Where Guake stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/dconf/user

Binary dconf db holding /apps/guake keys. Dump and load that path for backups. Never copy the db raw between machines with different dconf versions.

Reset the offending key with dconf reset (login shell is the classic culprit) or dump, edit, and reload the /apps/guake tree. The official FAQ points at dconf-editor for exactly this.
