Where Does BoilR Store Config and Shortcuts?

BoilR writes imported games into Steam shortcuts.vdf, with its own config and art cache in app folders.

Last updated

BoilR output lives in Steam, not in BoilR. Imports become third party shortcuts in userdata/<id>/config/shortcuts.vdf, with art beside them. Restart Steam after each import so the new entries load.

BoilR own state holds the SteamGridDB key, platform toggles, and the optional config file with store paths. Linux also uses ~/.boilr/link symlinks to dodge the spaces in paths bug. Back up shortcuts.vdf first, BoilR settings second.

Where BoilR stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[ID]\config\shortcuts.vdf

The actual imported library. Close Steam before copying. Config file documents store paths like Epic manifests and itch folders for reimports.

Linux
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/[ID]/config/shortcuts.vdf

Same file on Deck and desktop. Flatpak Steam shifts under ~/.var. BoilR config and ~/.boilr/link symlinks sit apart from Steam data.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up BoilR imports?

Copy shortcuts.vdf for your Steam user id while Steam is closed. Use BoilR shortcut backup too. Art can be redownloaded with the SteamGridDB key, so the vdf matters most.

Where is the BoilR config file?

In BoilR app config folders per the configuration docs, with sections per store. Most users never edit it. Set store paths there only if auto detection fails on your setup.
