Where Does Brave Store Your Profile?

The Brave profile folder on Windows, macOS and Linux, what brave://version shows as Profile Path, and what deleting it costs.

Last updated

Brave is a Chromium browser, so the profile layout matches Chrome: one Default folder for the profile you started with, then Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on for anything you added later. Bookmarks, history, saved passwords, extensions and Brave's Rewards and wallet state all live inside it.

Your exact path is printed by the browser. Open brave://version and read the Profile Path line, which shows the full address of the active profile, including which Profile n it is. That line beats any path written down elsewhere, because policies and the --user-data-dir flag can move the whole tree.

The trap is treating the profile folder as something disposable. It is the opposite: delete it and Brave starts again empty, taking the local wallet state with it.

Where Brave stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default

User Data is the parent for every profile, Default holds the first one, and Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on follow for anything you added later. The Cache subfolder inside the profile is the part worth clearing first, with Brave closed; the rest is data Brave cannot rebuild. %LOCALAPPDATA% is hidden by default, so paste the Profile Path from brave://version into File Explorer instead of clicking through.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Default

The same structure as Windows, minus the User Data segment. Finder hides Library, so use Go > Go to Folder and paste the Profile Path from brave://version. Clear cache through brave://settings/clearBrowserData rather than by deleting folders, which is the safer habit on any system.

Linux
~/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Default

No User Data segment here either, and secondary profiles are Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on in the same folder. The folder is hidden, so show hidden files in your file manager. The browser cache sits outside the profile under ~/.cache/BraveSoftware, which is the better target when Brave is running slowly.

Frequently asked questions

where is my brave profile folder

Type brave://version into the address bar and read the Profile Path line. On Windows that is usually %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default. Paste it straight into File Explorer, Finder or a terminal to open it, rather than hunting through hidden folders.

does deleting the brave profile folder lose my rewards

Yes for anything held locally. Rewards earnings that were never linked to an exchange sit in the profile folder, so deleting it takes them with it. A verified balance lives at the exchange instead, and a self-custody Brave Wallet is put back from its recovery phrase.

what can i safely delete in the brave user data folder

The Cache and Code Cache subfolders inside the profile, with Brave closed, are safe to delete because the browser rebuilds them. Everything else, including Bookmarks, History, Login Data and Preferences, is your actual profile. When in doubt, use brave://settings/clearBrowserData.
