Where Does Microsoft Edge Store Your Profile?

The Edge profile folder on Windows, macOS and Linux, what Default and Profile 1 mean, and the safest way to check your exact path.

Last updated

Edge is a Chromium browser, so the layout mirrors Chrome: one User Data parent folder holding Default for your first profile, then Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on for anything you added later. Bookmarks, history, saved passwords and extensions all live inside the active profile folder.

Your exact path is printed by the browser. Open edge://version and read the Profile Path line, which shows the full address of the profile in use, including which Profile n it is. That line beats any path written down elsewhere, because policies and the --user-data-dir flag can move the whole tree.

The trap is deleting User Data to fix a problem. That folder holds every bookmark and password stored locally, and Edge will cheerfully create an empty replacement on the next launch.

Where Microsoft Edge stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

User Data is the parent for every profile; Default is the first one and Profile 1 the second, with each profile holding its own Bookmarks, History and Login Data files. Microsoft's own documentation points at edge://version for the Profile Path. %LOCALAPPDATA% is hidden by default, so pasting the path or reading it off edge://version is faster than clicking through folders.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/User Data/Default

Same structure as Windows, under the Microsoft Edge folder in Application Support. Finder hides Library, so use Go > Go to Folder and paste the path, or take the Profile Path line from edge://version. The browser cache lives separately in ~/Library/Caches/Microsoft Edge, which is worth knowing when you need disk space back.

Linux
~/.config/microsoft-edge/Default

The official .deb and .rpm packages use ~/.config/microsoft-edge with Default and Profile n inside it, while the cache sits in ~/.cache/microsoft-edge. Since Edge is a hidden folder in your home directory, enable hidden files in your file manager. Other builds may differ, and edge://version stays the reliable check.

Frequently asked questions

how do i open my edge profile folder

Type edge://version into the address bar. The Profile Path line gives the full folder for the profile you have open, including whether it is Default or Profile 1, and you can paste that path straight into File Explorer, Finder or a terminal.

can i copy my edge profile to another computer

You can copy the folder while Edge is fully closed, but you will be signing in again afterwards. Carrying a Microsoft account sign-in between machines is what sync is for, and it moves bookmarks and passwords without any file copying or path fixing.

i deleted my edge user data folder how do i get it back

Check the Recycle Bin first, since an accidental delete normally lands there intact. If it is gone, Edge builds a fresh profile on the next launch. Recovering bookmarks and passwords then means signing into your Microsoft account, and only if sync was turned on before.
