Where Does Buku Store Bookmarks?
Buku keeps bookmarks in bookmarks.db under local share buku. One file backup covers tags, titles, and full text index.
Last updated
Buku is a single SQLite file manager for bookmarks. The default database sits in the XDG data home under a buku folder, creatable on first run. Every subcommand (add, search, export, encrypt) targets that file unless overridden.
Encryption and Compact modes rewrite the same path, so backups should predate those operations. Export to HTML or Markdown for sharing. The file also holds fetch metadata and full text search content, which explains its growth on big collections. Compact rewrites the same path in place.
Where Buku stores this, by platform
/home/<username>/.local/share/buku/bookmarks.db
Bookmarks database. Tags, titles, snapshots, and search index in one file. Back up with Buku closed.
/Users/<username>/.local/share/buku/bookmarks.db
Same layout on Mac. Override per invocation with the dbfile flag for project specific collections.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Buku bookmarks?
Copy bookmarks.db elsewhere with Buku closed. Restore by swapping it back. Tags and snapshots travel inside the same file.
Can the database live elsewhere?
Pass the dbfile flag or set the env var to relocate it. Scripts and cron jobs use the same override without config edits.
