Where Does Camtasia Save Recordings and Projects?
Camtasia auto saves TREC recordings to a default folder. The Windows and Mac paths and the prompt option.
Last updated
Camtasia Recorder auto names and saves each capture as a .trec file. On Windows the default folder is %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Camtasia. On Mac it is ~/Movies/Camtasia/Temporary Recordings. The file then lands in the Media Bin when the editor opens.
Project files (.tscproj) only reference that media, so moving recordings after the fact breaks the links unless you save a standalone project. Prefer flipping the recorder to prompt for a name and location per capture when starting a big series.
Where Camtasia stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Camtasia
Auto named .trec files land here. Move them into per project folders after recording, or enable the per recording Save dialog so they start in the right place.
~/Movies/Camtasia/Temporary Recordings
Temporary .trec files before you save the project. TechSmith support points here for crash recovery hunts. Copy strays out before cleaning the folder.
Frequently asked questions
how do i change where camtasia saves recordings
Set the recorder to prompt for file name and location after each capture. That beats a fixed folder when projects span drives. For existing files, move them then reopen the project so the Media Bin relinks.
camtasia crashed, where are my recordings
Check the default folder above for the latest .trec. On Mac that is the Temporary Recordings folder under ~/Movies/Camtasia. Copy any survivors out before relaunching so cleanup cannot remove them.
