Where Does Cantata Store Config and Playlists?

Where the Cantata MPD client keeps config, dynamic playlists and cache.

Last updated

Cantata follows Qt conventions on Linux: user config at ~/.config/cantata/cantata.conf with dynamic playlist sources under ~/.local/share/cantata/dynamic. KDE builds instead use the cantatarc naming in their config home.

System wide defaults sit under /etc for multi user machines. Keep user and system files apart: personal tweaks belong in your home, shared MPD host defaults belong in /etc.

Where Cantata stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/cantata/cantata.conf

Qt build user config plus dynamic playlist sources under local share. KDE builds use cantatarc naming instead. Check file ownership after sudo launches. System defaults live under /etc for all users.

Frequently asked questions

Cantata forgets my settings on every start. Why?

Fix ownership of ~/.config/cantata/cantata.conf and the cantatarc file to your user. Root owned configs from sudo launches are the classic cause of settings that never stick.

How do I enable a Cantata dynamic playlist?

Symlink the wanted file from ~/.local/share/cantata/dynamic into ~/.cache/cantata/dynamic/rules. The README documents exactly that dance for server mode dynamic playlists.
