Where Does ncspot Store Its Config?

ncspot keeps its settings in the ncspot config dir, defaulting to ~/.config/ncspot with keybindings and backends.

Last updated

ncspot stores its configuration in a dedicated folder under the XDG config home, defaulting to ~/.config/ncspot. Keybindings, audio backend choices and UI toggles live there.

Playback itself goes through librespot, so credentials flow through Spotify's own auth rather than files you manage. Keep the config dir in dotfiles; there is nothing secret in it worth excluding.

Where ncspot stores this, by platform

macOS
~/.config/ncspot/

Settings and keybindings. Premium account required for playback (librespot limitation). IPC socket enables remote control from scripts.

Linux
~/.config/ncspot/

Same folder. Vim-style keys work out of the box; override them here rather than fighting defaults per session.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change ncspot settings?

Edit the config file in ~/.config/ncspot (see the documented options in the user docs). Restart ncspot; there is no in-app settings editor for most options.

Does ncspot need Spotify Premium?

Yes, with a Spotify Premium account — ncspot streams through librespot and free accounts lack the API access it needs. The client refuses to play without one.
