Amplenote is offline first, so your notes live in two places: the cloud service and a local cache in your browser or app storage. Anything already downloaded stays editable offline, with an orange sync icon marking what has not uploaded yet.
The desktop app adds the feature worth setting up: automatic backup to a local directory. Point it at a folder and every note lands there as a Markdown file named by its id, with images and PDFs under a media subfolder. That folder is yours to sync, version, or archive however you like.
