Where Does Carla Save Projects and Settings on Linux?

Carla saves patchbay and rack projects as .carxp files where you choose, with config under ~/.config on Linux.

Last updated

Carla project files are portable. Save writes a .carxp (or older .carxs) to any folder you pick. That file references plugins and sample paths rather than embedding everything. Keep project folders self contained when you share them.

Global settings, plugin database cache, and custom plugin paths live under ~/.config/falkTX and ~/.cache on Linux. If a plugin vanishes after an update, rescan paths in Carla settings. Project files themselves stay valid.

Rack and patchbay saves. Store samples and SFZ files beside the project or in fixed library paths so reloads find them on a new machine.

Preferences and plugin path lists. Delete or rename to reset scanning without touching songs. Rescan from Carla settings after audio changes.

Frequently asked questions

What do I copy to move a Carla project?

The .carxp file plus any audio, MIDI, SF2, SFZ, and impulse files it points to. Plugin binaries come from the system. Reload paths break if samples move without the project.

Where is the Carla plugin cache?

Under the Carla config and cache folders in home. Use Refresh in the plugin database view instead of deleting files by hand. Custom bridges for Windows plugins add their own entries there.
