Where Are Files Stored on ChromeOS?

ChromeOS local Downloads and container share paths on Chromebooks for offline file access. And restore steps.

Last updated

ChromeOS splits local files between Downloads and containers. Downloads live in /home/chronos/user/Downloads with Play files beside them. The Files app shows them under My files.

Linux container files mount under Linux files in the same app. That tree maps into the Termina VM with Debian user space. Android app data stays sandboxed per app. Back up Downloads since Powerwashes wipe local state. Play files share the same Downloads root. USB drives mount under removable volumes. Guest mode leaves no traces.
