Where Does Civilization VII Store Mods?

Civilization VII reads mods from a Mods folder in its settings directory. Each mod gets its own subfolder with a mod info file.

Last updated

Civ VII modding is refreshingly file based. Mods live in a Mods folder inside the game's user settings directory, each in its own subfolder. Download, extract the inner folder there, and the game lists it under Additional Content on next launch. AppData is hidden by default on Windows, so paste the path or show hidden items first.

Saves live nearby but outside the Mods folder, so mod experiments rarely threaten campaigns. Still, UI mods lag behind patches by days, and a stale interface mod produces the weirdest symptoms. Disable everything after a major update, then re enable once authors catch up.

Where Civilization VII stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Mods

Each mod gets its own subfolder here with its mod info file inside. AppData is hidden, so paste the path into Explorer. Enable mods under Additional Content after copying.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Civilization VII/Mods

Same per mod folder layout as Windows. Community UI mods from the fan hub drop in identically and activate on launch.

Frequently asked questions

The mod does not appear in Additional Content. Why?

The archive usually contains one wrapper folder holding the real mod folder. Copy the inner folder so the mod info file sits two levels under Mods at most. Deeper nesting never loads.

Do mods work without a mod manager?

Yes for UI and data mods from the community hub, which the game picks up automatically on launch. Multiplayer with mods needs every player on identical files, so compare folders before blaming desyncs.
