Where Are Core Keeper Save Files Located?

Where Core Keeper keeps characters, worlds and maps per Steam ID, and how .pugbackup rollbacks work.

Last updated

Core Keeper stores saves under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Pugstorm\Core Keeper\Steam\<SteamID>: characters as numbered JSON in saves/, worlds as .world.gzip in worlds/, metadata in worldinfos/, per character maps in maps/. Slots count from zero, so slot 1 on screen is file 0 on disk.

Every file keeps a .pugbackup twin, which is the built in undo for corruption. Dedicated servers split the layout (characters stay client side, worlds move to the server), so server migrators copy worlds only and leave saves behind.

Where Core Keeper stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Pugstorm\Core Keeper\Steam\[SteamID]

Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Pugstorm\Core Keeper\Steam into Explorer, then open your ID folder. Back up the whole ID folder with the game closed; slots cross reference by number.

Linux
~/.config/unity3d/Pugstorm/Core Keeper/Steam/[SteamID]

Same saves/worlds split as Windows. Dedicated servers keep worlds under a DedicatedServer sibling instead. Show hidden files to reach the .config tree.

Frequently asked questions

How do I roll back a Core Keeper character or world?

Delete the broken character or world file (after copying it aside), then strip .pugbackup off the matching backup. Characters are N.json, worlds N.world.gzip, each with a dated backup beside it. The game reads whatever files sit in the folders, so renaming is the whole operation.

How do I move everything to a new PC?

Copy the Steam ID folder contents (saves, worlds, worldinfos, maps) to the same path on the new machine after running the game once. Slot numbers must stay aligned: characters and worlds reference each other by index, so move everything together, never one folder alone.
