Where Does Double Commander Store Settings?

Double Commander centers on doublecmd.xml with portable and flag overrides. The per OS spots and the finder.

Last updated

Double Commander keeps main settings in doublecmd.xml with doublecmd.cfg beside it for pre init values. Linux builds use ~/.config/doublecmd, Windows uses %APPDATA%\doublecmd. First launch copies defaults (multiarc.ini, pixmaps) into place.

Portable mode flips the location to a settings folder beside the program, marked by an empty doublecmd.inf file. The --config-dir flag beats both for testing. Lost? Open the Directory Hotlist, Special Dirs, and jump to %DC_CONFIG_PATH%; that variable always resolves to the live folder.

Where Double Commander stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/doublecmd

doublecmd.xml plus cfg and defaults here. Portable settings subfolder wins when doublecmd.inf exists. --config-dir overrides everything for test installs.

Windows
%APPDATA%\doublecmd

Same file set in Roaming. Copy folder contents (not the folder) when seeding a test copy, then launch it with --config-dir pointing there.

Frequently asked questions

how do i make double commander portable

Create an empty doublecmd.inf in a settings folder next to the exe and copy your configs in. The app then reads and writes locally. Delete the file to return to user profile storage.

where is the live double commander config folder

Ask the app: Directory Hotlist, Special Dirs, %DC_CONFIG_PATH%. That resolves portable, user, and --config-dir cases without guessing.
