Where Does Vifm Store Config and Trash?

Vifm keeps vifmrc, bookmarks and trash in ~/.config/vifm, with colorschemes beside them.

Last updated

Vifm stores its vim style configuration in a dedicated config home: vifmrc for options, bookmarks file for marks, and a Trash directory for deletions.

Deleted files wait in that Trash folder instead of vanishing, which rescues the occasional mistake. Copying the whole tree migrates bindings, marks and trash together.

Where Vifm stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/vifm

vifmrc, vifminfo with bookmarks and history, colorschemes folder, and Trash. Set $VIFM to relocate the whole tree elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Into the Trash folder inside ~/.config/vifm by default. Empty it from inside Vifm or the shell to reclaim space.

how do i back up vifm settings

Copy ~/.config/vifm whole. Bindings, marks, history and trash contents all travel in that one tree.
