Where Does Dust Store Messages?
Dust keeps messages encrypted per conversation, with nothing recoverable from files and everything tied to the account.
Last updated
Dust is encrypted ephemera by design. Messages encrypt per conversation with keys that live in app private storage. Account backups, where enabled, carry history across devices.
That design makes the in app backup the entire migration story. Same account plus a fresh backup restores conversations on the new phone. Screenshots of expiring content defeat the purpose, so export through proper channels instead. Lose both phone and backup and the history is gone by design.
Where Dust stores this, by platform
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/<Dust package>
Encrypted conversations and keys in private storage. The exact package varies, so match the Dust entry on your device. Use in app backup, never folder copies.
On My iPhone/Dust
Same split on iOS: encrypted local state plus account backup. Sign in and restore from backup to recover conversations.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Dust to a new phone?
Sign in with the same Dust account on the new phone. Conversations restore from the encrypted backup where enabled. Without a backup, history stays on the old device only.
Can Dust messages be recovered from files?
No. Dust encrypts per conversation with keys bound to the install. Folder copies achieve nothing, and support cannot decrypt anything. Backups inside the app are the only transfer path.
