Where Does EmEditor Store Settings?
EmEditor saves settings to the registry by default. Use Tools, Import and Export to move them as a file or switch to INI mode.
Last updated
EmEditor keeps personal settings in the Windows registry out of the box, unlike most editors that use files. The official migration path is the Import and Export wizard under Tools, which writes everything (configs, menus, toolbars, recent files) to a .reg file.
INI mode exists for portable use. Exporting settings as INI files (eeCommon.ini and friends) into the install folder flips EmEditor to file based storage from then on. The AppData folder copy mentioned in the official FAQ travels alongside the exported file.
Where EmEditor stores this, by platform
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EmSoft\EmEditor v3\Common
Personal settings root in the registry. Use the Import and Export wizard rather than hand editing keys.
C:\Tools\EmEditor\eeCommon.ini
Portable settings when INI mode is active. Created by the export wizard. Presence of eeUseIni.ini here disables registry storage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move EmEditor settings to a new PC?
On the old machine use Tools, Import and Export, then Export all settings into a registry file. On the new one import that file the same way. Registration does not transfer, so license the new copy separately.
Can EmEditor run fully portable?
Export to INI files from the same wizard. When EmEditor finds eeUseIni.ini in its folder it stops using the registry entirely, which suits USB installs.
