Where Does UltraEdit Store Settings?

UltraEdit keeps settings in INI files under AppData IDMComp UltraEdit. Copy that folder to migrate machines.

Last updated

UltraEdit stores its configuration in INI files under the user profile, in an IDMComp UltraEdit folder. The main file is uedit32.ini on older builds and uedit64u.ini on 64 bit installs. Wordfiles, plugins, and layouts sit beside it.

Search order matters for upgrades. Very old installs may still point at the Windows directory or the program folder from pre v10 days. Modern installs default to AppData unless a command line flag or environment variable redirects elsewhere. Check Advanced settings for the active paths when behavior looks odd.

Where UltraEdit stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\IDMComp\UltraEdit\uedit64u.ini

Main settings INI on 64 bit installs (uedit32.ini on 32 bit). Holds nearly all preferences. Back up the whole folder, not just this file.

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\IDMComp\UltraEdit\wordfiles

Working copy of syntax highlighting wordfiles. The install folder copy gets overwritten on update, this one does not.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move UltraEdit settings to a new PC?

Copy the whole IDMComp UltraEdit folder to the same AppData path on the new machine. INI files, wordfiles, and layouts travel together.

Where do I add syntax wordfiles?

Check the wordfiles path under Advanced, Settings, Editor display, Syntax highlighting. New wordfiles belong in the AppData copy, not the Program Files install folder.
