Where Are ESO Addons and Settings Stored?

ESO keeps addons and their settings in Documents under a live folder, with SavedVariables holding every configuration.

Last updated

ESO stores no character data locally at all. Everything under its Documents folder is interface: addon code in AddOns, addon settings in SavedVariables, screenshots beside them. Lose the folder and the game still knows your characters.

That split makes migration pleasant. Copying the whole Elder Scrolls Online folder moves every addon with its configuration intact. SavedVariables files are plain Lua, editable by hand when an addon offers no reset button, as long as the game is closed while you edit.

Where Elder Scrolls Online stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live

AddOns holds addon code, SavedVariables holds their settings as Lua files. Copy both with the game closed. The PTS client uses a pts folder instead of live.

macOS
~/Documents/Elder Scrolls Online/live

Same internal layout as Windows under the Mac Documents folder. Minion and other managers target this path on both systems.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly do I copy to a new PC?

Copy AddOns for the code and SavedVariables for the settings, with the game closed. Addons alone restore function with default options. Variables alone do nothing without their addons. Move both or move neither.

Where do test server addons go?

The public test realm uses a pts folder beside live with its own AddOns and variables. Test realm settings never touch the live ones, so experimenting there is safe by construction.
