Where Are World of Warcraft Account Settings Stored?
WoW keeps keybinds, macros, and addon settings in the WTF folder inside each client folder, for retail and every Classic version.
Last updated
Since patch 8.1, every World of Warcraft client gets its own folder inside the game directory: _retail_, _classic_, _classic_era_, and so on, with older installs still showing a _wrath_ folder from the Wrath of the Lich King Classic days. Each one holds its own WTF folder, and that is where your keybinds, macros, interface settings, and addon SavedVariables live. None of it is stored on Blizzard's servers.
The fastest route to the right place is the Battle.net launcher. Click the gear next to the Play button and choose Show in Explorer on Windows or Reveal in Finder on macOS. From there it is the version folder, then WTF, then Account. Copy that Account folder to a USB stick and you have moved your whole setup to another machine.
Where World of Warcraft stores this, by platform
[WoW install folder]\_retail_\WTF\Account\<AccountName>
The install folder itself varies: C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft is common, but plenty of people keep the game on another drive, so use the gear menu in Battle.net rather than guessing. Your account shows up as a number with a #1 suffix, like 123456789#1, instead of an email address.
/Applications/World of Warcraft/_retail_/WTF/Account/<AccountName>
Same structure as Windows inside the game folder, which Battle.net puts in /Applications by default. Under Account, SavedVariables holds the account-wide addon files while Realm and Character subfolders hold per-character settings. Pick Reveal in Finder from the Battle.net gear menu if you installed somewhere else.
Frequently asked questions
where are my wow keybinds saved
In bindings-cache.wtf, sitting directly inside WTF\Account\<your account> for that client. Macros live next to it in macros-cache.txt. Retail and Classic keep separate copies, so moving keybinds between them means copying those files into the other client's Account folder.
what does the WTF folder contain
Game settings, keybinds, macros, and every addon's SavedVariables. Account-wide addon data sits in Account\<account>\SavedVariables, and character-specific data sits under Account\<account>\<realm>\<character>. Delete the folder and everything resets to defaults, which is sometimes the point.
how do i back up my wow addon settings
Copy two folders from the client you play: WTF for settings and Interface for the addons themselves, then paste them into the same place on a fresh install. Do it with the game closed. If WoW is running, it overwrites your old files on exit and the restore quietly fails.
