Where Does Everything Store Settings and Index?

Where Voidtools Everything keeps its ini, database and backups on Windows, and how portable differs.

Last updated

Everything splits state into an ini file for settings and a database file for the index. Installed builds keep the ini under Roaming and the database under Local. Portable builds keep both beside the exe unless told otherwise.

A command line flag can point either file anywhere for multi profile setups. The ini regenerates on launch, so edits made while running vanish on exit. Close from the tray before touching files by hand. Filter rules share the ini file, so one export covers every search view.

Where Everything stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini

Installed settings home with the ini plus data. Portable builds use the exe folder instead. Database lives separately in the Local tree.

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch Everything between installed and portable storage?

Open the General options page and flip the store in AppData toggle, which moves ini plus database between homes. Installed builds default to AppData while portable builds default to the exe folder. Exit fully before moving files by hand.

How do I back up Everything settings and index?

Open the Tools menu and run the export settings command to a chosen folder for the ini. Copy the database file from the Local tree separately for the index itself. Restoring means importing the ini plus dropping the database back.
