Where Does FairEmail Store Settings and Backups?

FairEmail private data on Android is not browsable, so backup means the in app export file.

Last updated

FairEmail keeps accounts, settings and cached mail in app private storage (/data/data/eu.faircode.email), which Android never shows in file managers. Without root there is no browsable path and no file to copy; say that plainly before wasting an afternoon in the Files app.

Backup is an export flow: Settings, Backup tab, Export settings writes your accounts, identities and options to a file you place yourself (Downloads or Nextcloud are common picks). It restores configuration, not cached mail, which simply resyncs over IMAP. Passwords and OAuth tokens usually need reentry, and FairEmail skips Google cloud backup entirely.

Where FairEmail stores this, by platform

Android
/data/data/eu.faircode.email/

App private storage: accounts, settings database, cached messages and attachments. Not browsable without root; do not list deeper paths as reachable. Back up via Settings, Backup tab, Export settings (Pro feature) to a user chosen file, then manage that file yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move FairEmail to a new phone?

Export settings from the Backup tab to a file, copy it across, and import on the new device. Mail itself resyncs over IMAP; reenter passwords and OAuth tokens when prompted.

Does the FairEmail export include my emails?

No, only accounts, identities and settings. Cached messages stay in private storage and do not transfer, which is fine: IMAP refetches them. POP3 users should confirm nothing lives only on the old phone.
