Where Does Figlet Store Fonts?

Figlet font directories on Linux and macOS with override options.

Last updated

Figlet reads fonts from a compile-time directory. Linux distros use the share tree. Homebrew splits Intel and Silicon prefixes with Cellar realdirs beneath.

Overrides stay per run. An env var plus directory and font flags redirect lookups. No config file exists anywhere in the chain.

Where Figlet stores this, by platform

Linux
/usr/share/figlet

Compiled font dir with flf and flc files. Query live values with the info flag. Per-run override via env and flags. No config file exists.

macOS
/opt/homebrew/share/figlet

Same fonts under the Homebrew prefix with Silicon and Intel variants. Cellar realdir beneath for versioned installs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my font dir?

Query the compiled default with the info flag for the dir and default font. Env and command flags override per run. Keep custom fonts in the user visible dir to survive upgrades.

Is there a default font variable?

No. Only the font dir override and per-run flags exist in the man pages. Guides naming a default font variable describe something unsupported. Set fonts explicitly instead.
