Where Does Finale Save Scores and Support Files?
Finale scores default to a Finale Files folder in Documents, with templates and prefs in app data. Windows and Mac paths plus backup folders.
Last updated
Finale saves your scores (.musx files) wherever you choose, starting from a Finale Files folder in Documents. That folder also holds a shortcut straight to the support files, which saves a trip into the hidden Library. MakeMusic ended new Finale development in 2024, so these paths are stable. Nothing is moving anymore.
Everything else is split across folders you set in Preferences > Folders: backup, auto-save, templates, libraries and scratch files. The program defaults and Garritan instruments live in app data. To find where your backups actually go, open Preferences > Folders on your own machine, since every entry there is customizable.
Where Finale stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Finale Files
Default neighborhood for scores. Support files sit under %APPDATA%\MakeMusic\Finale [version]. Check Edit > Preferences > Folders for your real backup and auto-save locations.
~/Documents/Finale Files
Same role as on Windows, including the shortcut to the current version's support folder. The underlying files live in ~/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale [version].
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Finale backup or auto-save files?
Open Finale > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (Windows) and select Folders. The Backup and Auto Save rows show the exact locations on your machine. Move a rescued file out of those folders before continuing work in it.
How do I search for lost Finale scores?
Search the drive for .musx. That extension covers every modern Finale score. Once you find strays, consolidate them into your Finale Files folder so the next search takes seconds.
