Where Does Rosegarden Store Settings and Data?

Where Rosegarden keeps its prefs file and shortcut layouts on Linux, and how to reset a startup crash loop.

Last updated

Rosegarden keeps preferences in a Qt settings file under the user config home on Linux. Shortcut layouts live separately as XML files in the share tree. Device definitions load through the studio dialog rather than flat files.

Audio recordings sit outside the project file in the configured audio directory. That split means project backups without audio restore as silent timelines. Copy prefs, shortcuts and audio paths together for full moves. Tempo maps share the project files, so audio plus MIDI travel together.

Where Rosegarden stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/rosegarden/rosegarden.conf

Qt prefs file with general, MIDI, audio and notation options. Delete to reset while projects stay put. Shortcuts live separately in the share tree.

Frequently asked questions

Rosegarden crashes on startup. How do I reset it?

Close Rosegarden, then rename the prefs file under the user config tree and restart. The app rebuilds defaults on next launch while projects stay untouched. Shortcut layouts live separately in the share tree and survive the reset.

Where are my Rosegarden audio recordings?

Audio lives outside the project file in the directory from the audio configuration page. The project file holds MIDI plus references to those recordings. Back up both halves together or restores open silent.
