Where Is the Foot Terminal Config File?

Foot reads foot.ini from XDG config with a system template fallback. The lookup order and the -c override.

Last updated

Foot looks for foot.ini in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/foot/foot.ini, defaulting to ~/.config/foot/foot.ini. Failing that it falls back to the XDG system dirs copy, usually /etc/xdg/foot/foot.ini, which packaged installs ship as a fully commented template.

The file does not exist until you make it. Copy the system template over as a starting point rather than writing from scratch. Pass -c with a path to test a config without touching the live one; spawned terminals inherit the same file.

Where Foot stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/foot/foot.ini

User config; template at /etc/xdg/foot/foot.ini. Honors XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS. See man foot.ini for every key; -c overrides per launch.

Frequently asked questions

foot has no config file, what now

Normal. Make ~/.config/foot and copy /etc/xdg/foot/foot.ini into it as foot.ini. Uncomment and edit what you need; Foot reads it on each launch with nothing to restart.

how do i test a foot config safely

Launch with foot -c /path/to/test.ini. The window uses that file only. Keep the known good one in place until the experiment proves out.
