Where Does Fractal Store Sessions and Settings on Linux?

Fractal keeps its Matrix session database under ~/.local/share/fractal, with secrets in the keyring.

Last updated

Fractal stores synced rooms, media cache, and account state in its data folder under ~/.local/share/fractal. Exact database filenames shifted across the Fractal 4 to 6 rewrites, so copy the folder whole rather than single files.

Encryption secrets live in the system keyring (libsecret), not beside the database. Backing up files without the keyring means verification from scratch. Flatpak installs move both trees under ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Fractal.

Where Fractal stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.local/share/fractal

Session database plus media cache. Flatpak equivalent is ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Fractal/data/fractal. Copy with Fractal closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Fractal to a new machine?

Copy the data folder and migrate the login keyring entry, then log in and verify the session. Expect some re-verification of encrypted rooms on first launch.

Where is the Fractal config file?

There is barely one. Preferences live with the session data above. Window state and accounts restore from the same tree.
